Driven to succeed—
Lee considered herself successful, even though she struggled
to get by and knew her income was “way below” poverty
level. She’d raised four children and watched them
leave home. Then she lost her husband to illness. Change
was in the air.
That year repeated freezes wiped out crops and her income.
She was left with $8 to her name and not even a tank
of gas. On a whim she decided to contact SAGE trucking
school in Billings. She liked the idea of seeing more
of the country—maybe this was the way to a fresh
start. Still, she had no idea what it would take.
SAGE Trucking put her in touch
with REO, and things started happening quickly—in
fact, that same day she was enrolled. She received a
grant from REO to attend school and obtain housing. REO
helped with money for food, helped buy new glasses required
for her training—even
tires for her car so she could get to Billings.
Lee completed
her training and now drives for a large company. She
doesn’t expect to get rich, but plans
to be debt-free in less than a year. She’s able
to get home regularly, keep in touch with her long-time
friends and neighbors, and stay involved in the farming
which remains an important part of her life.
REO
means opportunity for farm and ranch workers & their
families.
